1. What is Computer-based IELTS (CB IELTS)?

CB IELTS is a computer-based version of IELTS. It consists of the Listening, Reading and Writing tests. To maintain our personal approach, all IELTS Speaking tests will still be conducted face-to-face. 

2. Where is CB IELTS available?

CB IELTS will be available at the following IELTS centres:
Bangladesh, Dhaka – British Council
Egypt, Alexandria – British Council
Egypt, Cairo Agouza – British Council
India, New Delhi – British Council
India, New Delhi – IDP Education Australia
Italy, Milan – British Council
Jordan, Amman – British Council
Kenya, Nairobi – Australian University Studies Institute

3.Why is CB IELTS not available everywhere?   

CB IELTS is being introduced initially at a limited number of IELTS centres, which have been chosen on the basis of specific technical and administrative requirements. The availability of the computer-based test will gradually be increased to meet the developing needs of both candidates and test score users globally.

4. Will CB IELTS be available in other countries in the future?

The IELTS partners intend to gather feedback from the initial rollout and plan to expand the number of centres offering the computer-based test in the future.

5. How can someone apply to take CB IELTS?

To apply for CB IELTS, you should contact one of the centres listed above. Please be aware that places are limited so you should apply for a test as early as possible.

6. How much does the CB IELTS test cost?

The computer-based test costs the same as the paper-based test.

7. How are the CB IELTS tests marked?

The CB IELTS Listening and Reading tests are marked by computer, while the Writing test responses are marked by qualified IELTS examiners, in the same way as the paper based version. This approach maintains the security, validity and consistency for which IELTS is internationally recognised. 

8. Do candidates have to take the Speaking test on computer in CB IELTS?

The Speaking test is not taken electronically. To maintain our personal approach, all IELTS Speaking tests are conducted face-to-face.

9. How is CB IELTS scored?

CB IELTS and paper-based IELTS are scored using the same nine-band scale.

10. Which is easier, the computer-based test or the paper-based test?

There is no difference between the difficulty of the computer-based test and the paper-based test.

11. When do candidates get the results of their CB IELTS test?

All IELTS candidates receive their test scores 13 calendar days after taking the test. 

12. Will the receiving institution know that a candidate has taken the computer-based version of IELTS?

A candidate’s Test Report Form will look the same whether they have sat the test in its computer-based or paper-based format.

13. Is General Training IELTS available as a computer-based test?

At this stage CB IELTS is only available for the Academic module. The IELTS partnership intends to make the General Training module available in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1)What is the test all about?

It covers four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It has two formats- General and Academic training. i.e. General (for people wanting to work or migrate abroad) and Academic (for people who want to study abroad). While all candidates take the same Speaking and Listening module there is an option of general and academic in Reading and Writing modules.

2)What is the candidate allowed to take to the examination room?

Only pencil, pen and eraser are allowed. No correction fluid should be used. Mobile phones and pagers must be switched off otherwise candidate will be disqualified.

3)What aspects of reading are tested in IELTS Academic Reading?

Candidates are tested on their ability to identify main ideas, supporting ideas, writer’s opinions and specific information.

4)How much time should be spent on each passage?

Candidates have 60 minutes to read through three passages and answer 40 questions. Candidates should ideally spend about 20 minutes on each passage. Candidates should make sure that they do not waste time on the questions they can’t answer and instead use their time sensibly to read through what they can and answer as many questions as possible.

5)How do candidates record their answers for reading test?

All answers must be entered on an Answer Sheet during the 60-minutes allowed. No extra time is given to transfer it from question sheet to the Answer Sheet.

6)Are candidates penalised for spelling and grammar mistakes made in their answers?

All words that candidates will need in order to answer the questions will be given in the passage, so they should be encouraged to transfer their answers to the Answer Sheet with care. Candidates should be aware that poor spelling and grammar are penalised.

7)How is the band score for Academic Reading calculated?

One mark is awarded for each of the 40 questions in the test. A band score conversion table is produced for each version of Academic Reading, which translates scores out of 40 onto the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are reported as a whole band or a half band.

8)What is a speaking Test?

Speaking test is conducted with a one-to-one interview with the certified examiner, which is recorded.

9)When do the candidates get their result?

Usually, the candidates get their result within 13 calendar days.

10)How often can I repeat the test?

There is no limitation on how frequently they can appear for IELTS test.
